Healthiest Valentine’s Day Chocolate

If you are on a diet that says you can’t have chocolate, or restrict enjoyable foods or treats, guess what? You are on the WRONG diet!

You should be able to enjoy your favorite foods and work into your health plan and lifestyle. If your diet is focused on cutting things out, or cutting calories, then it won’t actually help your metabolism. If you are feeding your body what it needs and boosting your metabolism, you can eat the chocolate and still feel great!

So let’s talk about chocolate! I sampled and looked at some good quality bars and here’s my review:

My guidelines for picking the chocolate bars were gluten free, some dairy free, high cacao content, low sugar content and quality of ingredients.

Endangered Species: I chose the caramel sea salt + dark chocolate flavor. This is also a fair trade brand! This was a really delicious bar and the cacao and sugar levels were great.

Enjoy Life: This bar is allergen free! It’s milk chocolate flavored but there is no milk in it. I got the puffed rice bar and this is most like a traditional candy bar. There is no cacao percentage in this bar but the sugar content is still fairly low.

Fresh Thyme: Sea salt and caramel flavor – this was a huge bar! The cacao content was pretty low and the sugar content was higher than the other bars. It was a milk chocolate and fair trade, but I think endangered species was actually better!

Green & Blacks: I picked the 70% cacao bar. It is very rich! The cacao level is high and the sugar level is low. This is more satisfying because its so dark. This is one of my top brands for healthy and tasty chocolate!

Hu: I chose the hazelnut butter. This one has a soft hazelnut center and really delicious. This is another one of my top picks!

Lakanto: This one was interesting because it is sugar free with monk fruit sweetener. This particular bar had 55% cacao and 0 g sugar. This one was actually the sweetest out of all of the bar! Its very fruity and a little too sweet for me.

Lily’s: This one is also 0 sugar because its sweetened with stevia. I prefer this one to the Lakanto because it is not as sweet. The cacao level is still pretty good!

Theo: I chose the salted almond bar and it was one of my favorites in terms of flavor. It has a great level of cacao and the sugar is fairly low. The texture was also nice with the almonds and salt.

So why is this important? A big aspect of my coaching is to show women that health is not about restriction. Health is about working with your cycle, hormones and metabolism to be able to enjoy your food and lifestyle.
